Study Title: Parenting Across Cultures in Contemporary England: A Mixed Method Approach

Invitation Paragraph:

You are invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Ask me/us if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether you wish to take part.

Thank you for reading this.

What is the purpose of the study?

The purpose of this project is to explore Nigerian parents’ values, beliefs, perceptions, and practices related to parenting. This study is part of a larger project exploring this topic across several cultural groups in England.

Why have I been invited to participate?

You have been invited to participate because:

  • you are from one of the cultural groups we aim to study and
  • You are able to communicate in English
  • you are over the age of 18 and
  • you are a parent
  • You live in England

Do I have to take part?

Participation is entirely voluntary, and it is up to you to decide whether to participate. If you do decide to take part, you will be asked to sign a consent form in the next section. If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw without having to give a reason as long as you don't press 'submit' at the end of this survey.

Some of the questions have the potential to be upsetting and triggering for some respondents. It is important that you are aware that you can skip questions or leave some questions unanswered.

What will happen to me if I take part?

If you agree to take part, you will be invited to continue to the next page, sign a consent form and continue to the following page where the online questionnaire will start using Brunel University's own platform for online surveys. Completing the survey will take about 20 minutes. Should you wish, you will be invited to take part in an online interview via Zoom or Teams at a later stage.

Are there any lifestyle restrictions?

None

What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?

The questionnaire might bring up strong emotions.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?

You will have an opportunity to reflect on your parenting and help improve social workers’ knowledge about parenting in different cultural groups.

What if something goes wrong?

If you are harmed by taking part in this research project, there are no special compensation arrangements. If you are harmed due to someone’s negligence, then you may have grounds for legal action, but you may have to pay for it.
